Historical Context
The Ojibwe called the river Nemanjitigweyaag, or “left hand river,” which lies on the left side of Lake Superior’s St. Louis Bay. Before the railroad, settlers floated logs from the forest down the Nemadji to reach sawmills in Minnesota and Wisconsin. After the logging era, large fires burned through the land.
Settlers tried to farm but realized the soil, though rich for growing trees, did not support crops. By the early 20th century, the settlers forfeited their land to the government. The Department of Natural Resources manages 94% of it now, planting and harvesting trees and improving habitats.
